Smoke Culture: The Art and History of Premium Rolling Papers

May 20, 2026 · By USA Smoke Club ·2 min read

Rolling papers have a history that stretches back further than most people realize — and the evolution from crude early wraps to the ultra-thin, slow-burning papers available today is a story worth knowing.

The Origin

The first commercial rolling papers appeared in Spain in the early 1600s, produced in Alcoy, Alicante — a region that remains synonymous with paper production. Spanish merchants traded them throughout Europe, and by the 1800s, rolling paper manufacturing had expanded to France, where brands like OCB and Rizla established themselves as industry fixtures.

The American market didn't develop serious rolling paper culture until the counterculture movements of the 1960s and 70s, when small European brands found a suddenly eager audience in the US.

Materials Matter

Modern premium rolling papers come in four primary materials, each with distinct characteristics:

  • Wood pulp — The original and most common. Burns evenly and is easy to roll. Entry-level to mid-tier papers use this.
  • Rice paper — Ultra-thin and slow-burning. Minimal impact on taste. Requires more rolling skill but rewards the patient.
  • Hemp paper — Thicker than rice, easier to roll, with a natural slow burn. The most popular choice for enthusiasts who want an upgrade from wood pulp without the learning curve of rice.
  • Cellulose (transparent) — Made from plant cellulose, these clear papers are visually striking and tasteless. A specialty product for the connoisseur.

Size Guide

Single wide (68mm), 1¼ (76mm), 1½ (78mm), Double Wide, King Size (100mm+), and King Size Slim are the primary formats. King Size Slim has become the dominant format for most enthusiasts — it offers the length for a full experience without the excess paper of a double wide.
